Rukshad Bhagwagar is Founder & Managing Partner of Forms which has become a leading name in handicraft exports from Central India. He shares valuable insights:
See what others are doing and do something different.
Observe your competitors, the big foreign competitors are not interested in low volume items, they do not like to make items requiring too much hand work. Pick such items, make items other than what others are making, this will also allow you to get better pricing.
Go to export fairs all over the world. There are specialized fairs also.
Go as a tourist, see what items are being offered and their supply terms. Go and visit their factories, you will be surprised that many things are so simple to do & can in fact be done better.
Find your market, study what sells where.
Stick to decent price/profit. Give quality that you have promised, it does not mean that you give the best quality that customer is not willing to pay you for and incur a loss.
Honesty is a premium, do what you have committed to do said.
He was sharing his experience on exports at a talk organised by VIA.
