CJ Karira has helped about 30,000 people including government servants get information says every citizen has right equal to an MP, MLA and MLC to get information on anything that involves tax-payer’s money.

Every department of State & Central government has to depute an officer called PIO to answer querries from the public.

It costs only Rs 10 (fees) and about Rs 30 for Speed Post to get useful information from government departments.

Useful suggestions by CJ Karira:

1. Don’t be afraid to ask.

2. No need to give reason to seek information.

3. When in doubt, just ask for inspection of file.

4. You can ask for information on a wider context if you do not wish to pinpoint your query.

5. Information on Private body can be found through Government agencies like TRAI, ICAI etc.

6. Typically the questionnaire should be no more than one A4 size document.

7. If you have several queries, try filing it as separate RTI no more than one A4 document.

8. Do not ask for opinion or advice.

9. Preferable mode of sending RTI is speed post. The delivery can be checked on website & print out taken for record.

10. An illiterate person can verbally file an RTI with the PIO and the PIO reduces this to writing.

11. For 1st appeal the fees is Rs 20 and it has to be made within time limit.

12. Some information may be confidential but you can mention in RTI that it is needed in larger public interest & if the PIO is convinced, it may be made available.

13. Any information that cannot be denied to parliament or legislature cannot be denied to a citizen.

14. RTI Act has overriding effect over all acts in India.

15. There is a portal called PG portal where you can post your grievance.

16. If you do not know the PIO, you can address your RTI to the HOD (Head of Department).

17. If you suffer a loss due to non-compliance by PIO to your RTI and you can prove this, you can seek compensation.

18. If something is not being addressed one can even use twitter to tweet to respective government department or minister and the response/ redressal is extremely quick.
